Member types

Aether Pro comes with a few member types that differ in their privileges. This document is meant to help you with choosing the best structure for your team.

In Aether, there are three basic types of members, in increasing privilege:

  • Channel members
  • Team members
  • Admins

Member pricing per type

Team members (~admins) are $10 each per month, and channel members (~users) are free. For updated pricing information, please check Pricing.

If you think of an Aether Pro channel as an email list, a channel member would be a mailing list member, and a team member would be a mailing list admin who can add and remove channel members, and create new ‘mailing lists’ (channels).

You can create an arbitrary number of mailing lists with individual email addresses with Aether Pro, they are useful as shared inboxes. Here are some use cases with typical costs noted underneath.

Channel members

Channel members are members that are added to only one channel at a time, and use Aether Pro via email.

Channel members cannot create new channels, nor can they add other team or channel members.

A channel member can be a member of multiple channels, they are not restricted to a single channel. However, the member has to be explicitly added to the channels, unlike team members, they cannot discover or join new channels. Alternatively, if the channel is marked public, they can sign up for them through the web sign-up form.

If you’ve received an email that says you’ve been added to a specific channel in a team, you’re a channel member.

They can:

  • Can use Aether Pro through email (they will receive posts as emails and will be able to reply to them, similar in spirit to a mailing list)
  • Can be added to multiple channels at the same time
  • Have minimal amount of mail actions available

They cannot:

  • Cannot use the native app (only email access)
  • Cannot create new channels
  • Cannot edit their messages
  • Cannot vote
  • Cannot search (through they can search in the content they received in their mailbox)

Team members

Team members are members who can sign in with the app and post through email. They can both create new channels and add members themselves. These people are usually core team members of the team.

They can:

  • Can use Aether Pro through email (they will receive posts as emails and will be able to reply to them)
  • Can use Aether Pro through the native app, and have access to all channels
  • Can search through all communities, content and people
  • Can edit or delete their own messages
  • Can add new channels
  • Can add new channel members
  • Can add new team members
  • Can vote
  • Can mute a channel while remaining subscribed
  • Most mail actions are available

They cannot:

  • Cannot moderate content that is not theirs
  • Cannot modify other people’s subscriptions

Admins

Admins are members who have either created the team or assigned explicitly by people who have created the team. Admins can do all of the above, plus moderate content, and control other people’s memberships.

  • Can vote
  • Can mute a channel while remaining a member
  • Can moderate other people’s content
  • Can modify other people’s channel subscriptions
  • All mail actions are available

They cannot:

  • Nothing, admins have full privileges
